Tap – Tap. Two shots to the head. Two young men with sketchy backgrounds and maybe more to come. Sheriff Elam Thompson’s small rural department was now faced with a string of homicides with a puzzling drug connection that led down a path of dizzying clues and small-town intrigue.
In a Mississippi community full of characters and sly secrets, Thompson must juggle his daily responsibilities and now match wits with a mysterious killer who is always one step ahead of him. Dead Pursuits chronicles the investigation, the daily lives of rural law enforcement, the people they serve, and the challenges faced by a department with limited resources. The tale abounds with rich characters like Bill “Mac” McKenzie who must come to terms with his own personal tragedy and the pursuit of his Christian beliefs challenged and battered by a lifetime of law enforcement; Rosie Nipples, an uninhibited and aged woman of surprising wisdom who outlived everyone dear to her and Fugly Brown, an untethered and comical young man torn between the life he leads and the one he wants. The Tragedy of Janie Sharp is an expansion of my 2016 publication "Murder in Rural Hill." In 1910, eighteen-year-old Janie Sharp was brutally murdered on a lonely country road in rural Mississippi. Her death led to a string of unsolved murders, a shattered community and legal proceedings that captured the nation's attention. Signed copies are available here
